Friday Dec 25, 2009

Product Description

Most of us know what it feels like to fall under the spell of food when one slice of pizza turns into half a pie, or a handful of chips leads to an empty bag. But it s harder to understand why we can’t seem to stop eating even when we know better. When we want so badly to say “no,” why do we continue to reach for food?

Dr. David Kessler, the dynamic former FDA commissioner who reinvented the food label and tackled the tobacco industry, now reveals how the food industry has hijacked the brains of millions of Americans. The result? America s number-one public health issue. Dr. Kessler cracks the code of overeating by explaining how our bodies and minds are changed when we consume foods that contain sugar, fat, and salt. Food manufacturers create products by manipulating these ingredients to stimulate our appetites, setting in motion a cycle of desire and consumption that ends with a nation of overeaters. The End of Overeating explains for the first time why it is exceptionally difficult to resist certain foods and why it s so easy to overindulge.

Dr. Kessler met with top scientists, physicians, and food industry insiders. The End of Overeating uncovers the shocking facts about how we lost control over our eating habits and how we can get it back. Dr. Kessler presents groundbreaking research, along with what is sure to be a controversial view inside the industry that continues to feed a nation of overeaters from popular brand manufacturers to advertisers, chain restaurants, and fast food franchises.

For the millions of people struggling with weight as well as for those of us who simply don’t understand why we can’t seem to stop eating our favorite foods, Dr. Kessler s cutting-edge investigation offers new insights and helpful tools to help us find a solution.

There has never been a more thorough, compelling, or in-depth analysis of why we eat the way we do.

What a complete fiction, as if this idiot thinks making food taste good is a plot. Of the thousands of book’s written about weight loss, this has to be the worst. What a joke!

What this book fails to recognize is that not everyone who is overweight is an overeater.

From his interview:

“At times I couldn’t decide whether you felt that the overweight were victims or undisciplined. Which is it?” Kessler replies:

The answer is probably neither. Nobody has explained to people what is going on with them, or given them the tools to cool stimuli. Yes, you are bombarded throughout the day. You respond. And that creates torment for people. But just because we are activated and stimulated doesn’t mean that that there aren’t things we can do. Yes, their brains are being hijacked. But once we understand what is going on, we can change.

Not to mention the fact that 100+ years ago, people ate whatever they want because resources were limited. We have not yet evolved to keep in line with the fact that we now have access to food 24/7 in any quantity we want, here in America. That’s the problem. We all need to readjust. It’s not about being overweight and ignorant, it’s about a need for evolution to catch up with our lifestyle change. Unfortunately, this book ignores all that and just assumes people who overeat are weak or ignorant.

If you really want to understand why people over eat just try to go on a high fat low carb diet and you’ll find out QUICK! It’s the carbs folks. This doc like most other docs that are schleping books out now don’t understand, or simply ignore the fact that carbs are what makes you fat.

This book can be summarized in one sentence: Try to stay away from foods high in fat, sugar and salt.

Trouble with this is that he has got this even wrong. The fat isn’t what is going to kill you – it’s the sugar. SUGAR or CARBOHYDRATES are the evil part of the diet. Stay away from them and you won’t feel the hunger panges. No you won’t and you’ll loose weight quick. Once you realize this your life will be improved dramaticall. Read Good Calories Bad Caloreis by Gary Taubes or Protein Power by Dr. Eades.

This is one man’s diatribe on the evils of salt, fat, and sugar. There is no groundbreaking research here, and the 250 pages could easily have been boiled down to about 10. The entire first half of the book is just a listing of foods that are high in fat, salt, and sugar. Unless you truly believed that a Big Mac might be a healthy food option, don’t waste your money on this book.

This “book” contains about enough information for a magazine article, and not a terribly informative one. But Kessler repeats himself endlessly, and his tone is condescending and pedantic. No one who’s even casually informed about appetite, satiation, and American food politics will find anything new here.
